10 Coolest Witches We’ve Seen On Screen

What is it that makes witches so enchanting? Well, apart from the obvious fact that they have superpowers that range from raising daisies to raising the undead. They are connected to the mysterious and the unknown, to the powers of Nature and ancient knowledge, as well as secrets of the Universe we can’t even begin to imagine. Witches can be good, bad, or something in-between. Surprisingly, the more mischievous the witch, the more we like her! And a really bad witch can actually scare the bejeezus out of you, that’s how dark and cruel they can be…That being said, we love to watch witches on screen because any movie or TV show becomes a hundred times better when there is some magic involved. Here are 10 coolest witches we’ve ever seen on screen.

Willow (Buffy, The Vampire Slayer)

Willow is just so relatable! Didn’t you wish to have magic powers as you were a high-school kid? Well, Willow actually got some, being the sweet and cute nerd that she was. She starts off as a Slayer’s sidekick, but then gradually grows into a supporting character that is just as important as Buffy herself. It’s hard to count how many times they’ve saved the world together. And there’s also one time when she herself became the threat to the world’s balance after the death of her girlfriend Tara. She’s just too cool!

Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)

Yes, Maleficent is among the most menacing and dangerous witches we’ve ever seen. She’s bad, she knows it, and fully enjoys it! Disney’s Mistress of All Evil is powerful, stylish, and definitely a person no one wants to cross (but they still do, hence, the whole curse thing happens).

Halliwel Sisters (Charmed)

Charmed are three witches trying to lead ordinary lives with everyday drama, relationships, heartbreaks, and demonic forces as a cherry on top. We see these seemingly ordinary girls discover their powers and learn how to use them, including doing questionable things like love spells and potions. They were surrounded by demons, angels, and all kinds of not-so-whimsical creatures long before it became a TV show trend!

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)

Hermione is just a kid when we first see her, but we can already tell that she’ll become great. Harry Potter wouldn’t last a month in Hogwarts without the wit, talent, and friendship of young Hermione Granger. As years go by, Hermione grows into a knowledgeable, brave, and beautiful witch who will do anything to protect those she loves most.

Sabrina (Sabrina the Teenage Witch)

Sabrina is the living and breathing proof that being a witch is fun! She’s experiencing all the hardships of her teen years with school, grades, friendships, boyfriends, and heartbreaks, but with a magic twist that often gives her an upper hand. She also lives with two witchy aunts that try to help her from time to time, and more than wise black cat named Salem. Sabrina is simply gorgeous!

Melisandre (Game of Thrones)

Melisandre was never labelled as a witch, but se surely matches the description pretty well! The Red Priestess of R’hllor has some pretty serious magical powers that she’s not afraid to use to gain her goals. Firstly, she’s learned how to hide her more than old body in a young beautiful guise. Secondly, she used human sacrifice to help Stannis win over his enemies (giving away his daughter for that). Thirdly, she was the one who resurrected Jon Snow from the dead, helping him become the true King in the North. And the list goes on!

Professor Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter)

The Headmistress of Hogwarts is a strict, fierce, and incredibly powerful witch. We can only imagine what she was capable of doing back in the day, but Professor McGonagall fought in the first war against Voldemort, which means she’s beyond mighty. She also possesses a rare capability to morph into other living things (usually it’s a cat or a bird). She likes to stick to the rules, but also appreciates it when rules are bent for the greater good.

Fringilla Vigo (The Witcher)

Fringilla is a good witch gone bad (or rather brainwashed after she was assigned to aid the king of Nilfgaard). Now whatever comes out of her mouth is about how Nilfgaard will save the world (by conquering it, of course) and how the best thing everyone can do is just accept it. And to help with that she’s ready to break every magic rule that has ever existed to create super powerful magic. She uses human sacrifices on a daily basis and even turned live humans into magic bombs during the battle at Aretuza.

Ursula (The Little Mermaid)

Being a sea-witch is tough, after all, you are bound by its borders and can do nothing on the surface. That’s why Ursula did her best to get out into the outside world (probably out of sheer boredom caused by casting spells on mermaids and merman). She is vicious, has her own very distinctive style, and can deceive anyone.

Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher)

The whole series is packed with pretty badass witches, but Yennefer is one of the most breathtaking ones. She was born with a curved spine and chin, was bullied all her life at a farmer’s home where she lived, and later was discovered by sorceress Tissaia de Vries who took the girl to a magic school. Yennefer has undergone lots of transformations and even changed her whole appearance (the price was too much, though). She can use the magic of Chaos like no one else can (portals, anyone?) in the books and TV series. She’s also the love interest of Geralt and together they make quite a stunning couple!
