1. Massachusetts
Public universities in the Massachusetts higher education system are free of tuition for state residents over 60. Other extras, such as campus fees and lab fees, may also be waived, depending on the university.
2. Pennsylvania
While not all colleges in Pennsylvania are free for senior citizens, you can still find some. Clarion University allows residents over 62 to sign up to 12 credits free of charge. The Penn State system offers a tuition waiver of up to six credits per semester for residents aged 60.
3. Ohio
All public universities and colleges in Ohio allow residents over 60 to audit courses for free if space is available. However, older students do not receive credit and still need to pay for extra course fees and mandatory course materials.
4. Kentucky
State-supported universities in Kentucky waive tuition for residents age 65 or older. Senior residents can apply for any courses they want, if space is available. However, extra fees are the responsibility of the student.
5. Colorado
Colorado residents 55 and older must submit an Application for A Lifetime Learner Classroom Visit to attend classes at Colorado State University for free. They will not, however, receive degree credits. The University of Colorado Denver also waives tuition for state citizens over 60, but classes requiring special equipment are not open to these students.
6. Texas
If you're a Texas resident age 65 or older, you can take up to 6 credits per semester for free at any Texas State University. At some schools, like the University of Texas at Dallas, you need to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 to qualify for an ongoing tuition waiver.
7. Washington
Washington state law allows citizens over the age of 60 to study at any university or college of their choice. Senior citizens can register for up to 6 credits without tuition or audit courses with nominal fees.
8. Oregon
The University of Oregon offers free courses to residents 65 and older if spots are available. Elderly students need to obtain the instructor's consent before starting a course and pay any mandatory course fees.
9. California
Tuition and application fees at California state colleges and universities are waived for those 60 and older. In addition, older students need to pay just $1 for student fees to enjoy health facilities and other campus benefits.
10. Hawaii
The University of Hawaii and state-supported community colleges by law waive tuition and fees for any Hawaii resident older than 60. However, these students cannot receive degree credit or keep permanent records.
