Buildings can be altered, skies filled with flying cars and neon ads, but the locations still remain recognizable. This means you can visit them and experience the atmosphere of your favorite movie! Here are 10 cool locations from famous movies you should see at least once.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – King’s Cross Station (London, UK)
This may not be the most spectacular filming location, but it’s exactly the same as in the movie! Just try not to run into the ‘teleport’ wall as it will most likely leave you disappointed. And don’t miss Ollivander’s Wand shop nearby – it looks exactly like in the movie.
Lord of the Rings – Glaciers of South Island and The Southern Alps (New Zealand)
The whole country has been turned into a huge filming ground for the breathtaking Lord of the Rings movie, but glaciers and mountains of the South Islands are among the most picturesque. They will definitely take your breath away!
Jurassic Park – Kauai (Hawaii)
Head to the Kauai Island if you want to experience wilderness untouched by man with lush nature like you’ve never seen before. It definitely looks like dinosaurs can be lurking in the green depths of its Na Pali Coast.
The Shining – Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood, Oregon)
The Shining is one of those iconic movies that stay with you forever…It’s just impossible to forget them! While being a gut-wrenching thriller, The Shining was actually filmed in a beautiful location all movie fans should visit at least once.
Braveheart – County Meath (Ireland)
This 12th century castle is definitely a must-see when you are in Ireland as it was a filming spot of the legendary Braveheart movie. We may or may not like Mel Gibson, but that movie was top notch!
Ghostbusters – Hook & Ladder Company 8 Firehouse (New York)
While in reality the building isn’t home to a bunch of adventurous ghost-busters, it’s still one of the most iconic buildings in New York. Inside you will find a fully functional firehouse, which means the building is used for the same – helping people and saving the city from destruction! They won’t allow you inside, though.
James Bond Skyfall – Glen Coe, Lochaber (Scottish Highlands)
Rightfully considered one of the most picturesque and romantic spots in the Scottish Highlands, Glen Coe is a popular filming location that you might recognize from the movie Skyfall. When James Bond returns to his childhood home, this is exactly where he ends up! Harry Potter has also been filmed here.
The Revenant – Alberta (Canada)
This is another one of those locations you’ll need to experience slowly and thoughtfully as it is a true paradise created by Mother Nature. The Revenant, which finally won Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar, was shot in various locations like Castle Rock, Dead Man’s Flats, Drumheller, and Kananaskis County. Each of them is great for exploration either in summer or in winter if you want to get a more movie-like atmosphere.
Blade Runner – Central Market (LA, California)
Blade Runner certainly isn’t the first movie that used the Central Market as its location, but it is most interesting to compare the digitally altered futuristic market of Blade Runner and the actual Central Market that is bustling with life in Los Angeles. It looks far less sci-fi, but it is still a cool place to be.
Castaway – Monuriki (Fiji)
If you want to experience the wilderness of the uninhabited island that was used as a location for filming Castaway, then wait no longer and head to Monuriki. The island is open for day trips, but you can stay in one of the nearby resorts (they are quite pricey, though). While visiting the location, don’t forget to take photos of the “Help Me” sign that remained on sand from the filming of the movie.
