So, what makes New York so special, and why Manhattan in particular? Well, for starters, it's small, very small. In fact, it only covers 23.7 square miles and is the most densely populated area in NYC. It also has limited parking, which is nearly as rare as unicorns in New York, so people are willing to pay a pretty penny for that convenience. Plus, just about everything is expensive here, including construction costs and property taxes. Landlords and sellers charge a lot for Manhattan real estate to offset these expenses - and because they can.

Of course, many Manhattan apartments are like no others.

While they may come with steep price tags, they may also include floor-to-ceiling windows, amazing views of the city, and more space than you'll find anywhere else, including your local Walmart. Many also feature amenities like a doorman and concierge services, as well as more insane offerings like pet spas for Fluffy and Rover, personal trainers when the gym is too far to walk, and climbing walls for those times when you just really want to climb something. It's not a bad life, really. The problem is, you (and everyone you know) probably can't afford it. Why? Because these apartments cost millions of dollars, probably more millions than most people can even imagine.

Really, a $52 Million Apartment?

Well, not anymore. As of August, one of the most expensive real estate listings in NYC dropped its price to a meager $49,500,000!

You can probably haggle with the seller on this, but a few million one way or the other isn't going to make much of a difference. (In case you're wondering, Zillow estimates that this particular mortgage would cost just under $200,000 per month.) However, before you decide that this may be slightly over your budget, consider the amenities it offers.

First of all, it's over 1,000 feet high. This is wonderful news if you like gorgeous views, but it's not so great if you're scared of heights. Those gorgeous views include a panoramic vista of Central Park, so you can people-watch from the comfort of your own home. In addition, it has 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and oh, an absurdly huge 6,240 square feet of space. Seriously, the "great room" is 1,500 square feet, which is larger than many average homes.

The building itself, One57, is home to a slew of billionaires you don't know as well as several celebrities. For privacy reasons, they haven't released the names of the residents, but Sting and Denzel Washington count among the rumors.

The building includes a health club, a spa, and an indoor swimming pool that's three floors high and overlooks Carnegie Hall (you can't make this stuff up). You'll also have 24-hour room service to offset the hours you spend at the "health club," catering, housekeeping, a meeting room and ballroom (in case you decide to host a party 1800s style), and multilingual hotel staff (though the available languages aren't specified, so you may want to ask before you move in to avoid confusion).
